Exhibits

The focus of this exhibit is the Fifth Maine Regiment's recently conserved battleflag handcrafted in 1861 and the men and women who followed the flag through three years of war.

The Fifth Regiment Maine Volunteer Infantry was knowa as a fighting regiment.  The Memorial Hall they so lovingly built displays the personal and regimental items placed in the hall by the veterans themselves.

Between 1880 and 1920 Peaks Island developed into one of the most popular tourist destination in the country.  Hundreds of thousands of visitors were drawn to the island's hotels, summer theatres, amusement park and outdoor activities.  So well-known was Peaks that the media dubbed it the "Coney Island of Maine".

Changing exhibit highlights items found in attics, basement, old trunks, in the woods, and even at the dump.  Each has a story to tell about our community's past.

As the largest and most important military base in Casco Bay, the Peaks Island Military Reservation was the crown jewel in the defense system established in Casco Bay during WWII.  Learn how the presence of 800-900 soldiers on Peaks Island altered the landscape and island lifestyle as well as the role played by Peaks during the war years.
