Monday August 11, 2003. "Clearing Garden Area of Rocks; Garden Enhancement".

2003 saw a major improvement in the 5th Maine garden. On Monday, August 11th,  island landscaper and excavator Terry Edwards removed as much of the loose rock as possible from the expanded garden site, while also shoring-up the wall and erosion area.

He moved a large truckload of rock off the site.  He also was able to tear out a great deal of the troublesome bittersweet root.  Our 5th Maine abutters, Rig Trimby and his wife Cynthia Mollus, donated the cost and allowed Terry to move his heavy equipment over their land.

We thank them sincerely for their generosity, as well as Terry's capable hands at the controls of the excavation machine.

Ahead in 2004, we hope to start the planting in this newly cleared area and start work on a safer and more distinct path down to the shore.

The "bittersweet battle" has been an ongoing concern since the beginning of this project, and willing volunteers are always in great need and most welcome
