May 24, 2004. "Assessing the Fifth Maine's Collection".
On May 24, 2004 Ron Harvey of Tuckerbrook Conservation conducted the first ever
assessment of the Fifth Maine's collection of historic artifacts.

He was asked to assess the overall condition of the collection items, the
display areas, and the storage area. His report indicated that the Fifth
Maine Museum is doing a good job of caring for its collection given our limited means.
He also made a number of reccomendations for improvements.

These include fitting existing display cases with acid-free materials to
mitigate off-gassing from the wooden cases, creation of a larger storage area
for materials not on display, and treatment of the regiment's battle flag by
a qualified conservateur. The Collections committee is now crafting a
collections care plan that incorporates many of Mr. Harvey's reccomendations.
The conservation assessment was funded by a Preservation Assistance Grant
from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
