"Save the Flag Project
Rolls On"
A momentous event occurred at the Fifth Maine on Sunday October 23rd.
The Regiment’s battle flag was removed from its display case high up on
the north wall of Memorial Hall for the first time since it was placed there in 1888 !!

Prior to the arrival of conservateur Gwen Spicer and her assistant Abby Zoldowski,
Building Committee members, Chris Roberts and Mick Hocker, set up staging and removed
the large glass and wood frame that covered the case.

Gwen and Abby spent about five hours meticulously removing the
flag and preparing it for travel to their studios in Delmar, New York,
where it is now safely ensconced awaiting treatment.
Response to this project has been overwhelmingly positive.
About 95% of the estimated $21,000 budget has been raised and donations are
still being sought for the balance. The flag is expected to return to the
museum in June of 2006. For more information visit the
The Spicer Art Conservation, L.L.C. web site.

to a large cardboard tube and covered with unbleached muslin.
A 'raincoat' (plastic sheet) was added on the outside to protect
the flag from the rainy weather.
