5th Maine's Newest Garden Area Takes Shape
For the past three years a group of volunteers under the guidance of Joan
and Larry Blake have worked diligently to beautify the ocean side of the
Fifth Maine.

than a pick and shovel are needed for the job.

At one time the area was a lovely garden planted and
maintained by the ladies of the Fifth Maine veterans but, over the years,
became overgrown with bittersweet, bamboo and weeds. Since no plans of the original garden exist, the Blakes consulted with

to determine what a Victorian era garden
may have looked like. A plan was drawn up and work continues each season. Now that the
area is nearly cleaned out, many of the original wildflowers blossom once again.
Last summer a large boulder, suitable for a bench, was uncovered and, with
the help of Dean Kamp and sons John and Chris, moved to a spot near the
shore. A stone patio was created around the boulder and work begun on a
walkway to the shore. The volunteers plan to complete the walkway and
add many more plants this year. Volunteers are always welcome to help
with the new work as well as help maintain the gardens already completed.
