Major Interior Repair/Restoration Work Ahead For 2007

As stewards of their historic hall, Fifth Maine volunteers are constantly working to maintain the hall in good condition. Given its location on the coast of Maine, the hall is subjected to extremes of weather making their job quite challenging.

A major roof leak caused a chunk of the dining room ceiling to fall out. The ceiling, and the porch roof above, are both in need of repair.

In recent years two of the more visible projects were restoration of the 17 large memorial windows and updating of the kitchen and restrooms to meet code. Planned for this year is the restoration of the original plaster walls and ceiling in the entrance foyer and repair/painting of the dining room and kitchen ceilings that were damaged as a result of various roof leaks.

The original plaster in our foyer/entrance area was coated with calcimine, a substance that provides poor adhesion for paint, thus causing it to flake off. The 20 or so layers of paint (some of which is lead-based) must be removed in order to remove the calcimine.

While the building committee arranges for the work to be done, other volunteers are raising money to pay for the work. Since grants for "bricks and mortar" projects are scarce, donations are being sought from private donors and businesses. Your tax-deductible contributions are always welcome.

That old Maine standby - duct tape - holds the glass in a dining room window. A project to replace the worn-out windows in the dining room has also received priority by the Building Committee.
Another past roof leak caused this damage above the oceanside dining room door.
