The Fifth Maine's new educational initiative, Collections to Classrooms, is off to a great start. Museum educator Patricia Erickson has developed several lesson plans and activities that draw on a variety of items from the museum's collection.
Thus far grades 4 & 5 at the Peaks Island School have learned about Native American culture in Casco Bay, Peaks Island farms, and how to use a compass and "read" maps. Come spring, they will be learning how WWII affected the island and take a field trip to Battery Steele.
This project is a collaboration between the museum, the Peaks Island School and PTO, the Peaks Island Land Preserve and the Peaks Island Information Exchange and is funded by generous grants from the Peaks Island Fund, the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust, and the Edward H. Daveis Benevolent Fund. The students are enthusiastic and look forward to each new activity.
