Time Capsule Palooza
Jun 19 @ 11:00 am – 2:30 pm

The Fifth Maine Museum’s Time Capsule Palooza is BACK!  We may have been delayed by the pandemic, but we were NOT canceled!

This is a chance to MAKE history on Peaks Island. We are burying this time capsule for future Peaks Islanders to dig up during their celebrations of Maine’s Tricentennial — in 2120!!

We are inviting the community to contribute items that create a “snapshot” of life on Peaks Island in the years 2020-2022*.

Here are some guidelines that will prevent the deterioration of the items in the time capsule.

  • Your item should fit into a 1-quart, brand new, ziplock plastic bag.
  • One submission per household.
  • Black and white photographs are more stable than color photographs.
  • Technology progresses swiftly. Today’s electronic formats may be inaccessible in the future. Paper-based contributions stand the test of time.
  • Newspaper articles are printed on paper with high-acid content that deteriorates quickly. Photocopied versions of newspaper articles will preserve the information better.
  • Be sure to label and document your submission. Write names, location, and dates on pictures, articles, and handwritten notes. Include a note of explanation with objects.
  • Non-flammable, non-toxic items only. No plants, no food, no liquids, no gasses.
  • This time capsule is inclusive and rated G. Family-friendly content only please.

If you can’t attend our Time Capsule Palooza event at the Bicentennial Celebration on June 19th, you can still participate!! We’ll be collecting contributions at the Fifth Maine Museum starting May 27th (opening day) until June 16th. Or you can mail your items to Fifth Maine Museum, P. O. Box 41, Peaks Island 04108. If you want to share your story and images electronically, you can email us — fifthmainemuseum@gmail.com.

Thank you so much for being part of the History, Legacy, and Community of Peaks Island!

*Final approval of submissions will be made by the Board of Directors of the Fifth Maine Museum. Please keep in mind that all submissions will remain in the time capsule for 98 years. We won’t be able to dig the time capsule up to recover Aunt Tilda’s gold bracelet – no matter how valuable!
